National Professional Qualifications (NPQs)

About NPQs

NPQs are prestigious professional qualifications, already widely recognised by the sector. They are voluntary and are designed to support the professional development of teachers and school leaders at all levels, across primary and secondary schools.

 

If you are looking for a way to enhance your knowledge and future career in a specific avenue of teacher development, NPQs may be the perfect course for you.

The DfE has announced that teachers and leaders employed in state funded schools and state funded organisations that offer 16-19 places in England will be able to access a fully funded NPQ from autumn 2021.  This is to support teachers and pupils following the disruption to learning faced as a result of COVID-19.

You can no longer enrol for the November 2021 cohort, but there are still places available for the February cohort. You can use the forms below to apply for this cohort, or please contact us to discuss which option may be best for you.

This booklet was created before the government changed its funding for the NPQs. Therefore, please ignore the costs attached to each NPQ.

The reformed NPQs are:

 

National Professional Qualification for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) 

  • You should be, or aspire to be, a teacher who has responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in your school. You may have responsibilities for the development of all teachers across a school or specifically trainees or teachers who are early in their career.

  • Programme length is 12 months.

National Professional Qualification for Leading Behaviour and Culture (NPQLBC) 

  • You should be, or aspire to be, a teacher who has responsibilities for behaviour and pupil welfare, including Heads of Year, behaviour leads, and pastoral staff.

  • Programme length is 12 months.

National Professional Qualification for Leading Teaching (NPQLT) 

  • You should be, or aspire to be, a teacher who has responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase.

  • Programme length is 12 months.

  • We do not currently provide the NPQLT, but you can apply via the School-Led Network 

 

National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) 

  • You should be, or aspire to be, a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities, for example an experienced middle leader or an assistant headteacher.

  • Programme length is 18 months.

  • You will complete a school improvement project within your team, lasting at least 2 terms, aimed at reducing variation in pupil progress and attainment, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching.

National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) 

  • You should have, or aspire to have, responsibility for leading a school.

  • Programme length is 18 months.

  • You will lead a school change programme, lasting at least 2 terms, to improve pupil progress and attainment as well as design an action plan to meet your placement school’s resourcing and capability needs.

National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership (NPQEL) 

  • You should be, or aspire to be, a school leader who is an executive headteacher or have a school trust CEO role with responsibility for leading several schools.

  • Programme length is 18 months.

  • You will design a sustainable business development strategy for your organisation, analysing the benefits, costs and risks of different options. You will also lead a project to improve progress and attainment in several schools.

  • We do not currently provide the NPQEL, but you can apply via the School-Led Network

The DfE have also announced the introduction of two further NPQs from Autumn 2022: the Leading Literacy (NPQLL) and Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) qualifications. We partner with the School Led-Network to deliver our NPQs.
