NPQ: Leading Teacher Development

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

The NPQ in Middle Leadership has been replaced with three specialist NPQs; Leading Teacher Development is one of the new NPQs.

This NPQ is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school. They may have responsibilities for the development of all teachers across a school or specifically trainees or teachers who are early in their career.

The NPQLTD will allow teachers to engage in evidence-based approaches and design effective professional development which avoids creating unnecessary workload. It will also allow for the delivery of effective professional development with professional conversations giving participants the opportunity to successfully support Early Career Teachers (ECT).

Programme delivery

Programme delivery for all of our NPQs is designed to be flexible to work around current work and personal commitments.

The commitment needed is:

  • Synchronous hours (online and in-person): 24 hours

  • Self-study: 36 hours

  • Mentoring: 2 hours

  • Programme length: 12 months

The programme is made up of a blend of in-person, online and self-study components totalling a maximum of four days plus self-study.

Our delivery model requires a day together in the first term and a half day in terms two and three.

Who is NPQ Leading Teacher Development for? This NPQ is for teachers who have influence over the design and delivery of professional development as well as implementation. The programme aims to empower participants to:

  • Design effective, evidence based professional development without creating unnecessary workload

  • Deliver and support colleagues to deliver, effective professional development and coaching

  • Create and implement a plan for professional development, enabling positive sustainable change

If you are currently working as an induction tutor, mentor or a CPD lead then this NPQ will embed your knowledge and develop new skills. NELT Teaching School Hub is working in partnership with the School-Led Network to provide NPQs. To apply for the NPQ Teacher Development go to - School-Led NPQ Network.
